I promised to do a little Oktoberfest Special. Today is the last day of this festival ending in a few hours. First of all we call it Wies'n, not Wiese or Wiesen and barely call it the Oktoberfest.
Some facts first:
It is held each year in Munich, Germany running from late September to October. It lasts 2 Weeks and about six million people are attending every year. It is the world's largest traditional festival. The Oktoberfest was founded in 1810 due to the marriage of King Ludwig I with his Princess Therese. (The place from the festival is called Theresienwiese)
Since 1950, there has been a traditional festival opening. A twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the current Mayor of Munich- shouting the famous words"
O'zapft is!"-opens the Oktoberfest.
There are about 10 main tents at the Oktoberfest. Till the evening there is a traditional atmosphere with music and after that the music is louder and the croud grow to a party mentality.... The beer is served in 1 Liter.
Important is never forget to eat something, even when we say 3 Liter of Beer replace a meal but it is better to eat something and the food is delicious, of course not in every tent the food is as good as normal bavarian food, because there a lot of people and everything needs to get fast...
Visitors love our traditional food such as Hendl- Chicken
, Schweinsbraten- Roast Pork, Steckerlfisch -grilled fish on a stick, Knödel- dumplings, Kasspatz'n- Thimble dumplings made with cheese
(wow difficult to find the translation) along with such Bavarian delicacies as our Weisswurst- white sausages and Obatzda- cream cheese with our so loved Brez'n- Pretzeln.
Funny facts:
Each year about 6000000 liters beer were drunk and 500000 units of chicken were eat as well as 40000 kg of fish.
Now the fashion:
as it as a traditional festival most of the people go traditional.
We call our dresses Dirndl and the trousers for the boys Lederhosen.
The dirndl consists of a bodice and skirt (mostly 1 piece) with a blouse and apron. While appearing to be simple and plain, modern dirndl can be quite expensive as it is tailored and sometimes cut from costly hand-printed or silk fabrics. In our dialect 'dirndl' originally referred to a young woman or a girl, and 'dirndlkleid' to the dress. Nowadays, 'dirndl' equally refer to either a young woman (in the dialect) or to the dress. The placement of the knot on the apron is really important! A knot tied on the woman's left side indicates she is single, a knot tied on the right means she is married, engaged or otherwise taken, and a knot tied in the back means the woman is widowed. The traditional length is till the ankle, modern dirndl can be shorter till the knees or a bit over it, but NEVER EVER wear a mini dirndl! Also never wear high boots to a dirndl! You can wear ballerina flats, low high heels ( high ones can hurt a lot; you have to stand and dance on the benches the whole day and go to an after party!) or alpine boots.
You can braid your hair or leave it open but also wear a ponytail.
Wear small bags you can wrap around and put on your side, bags with handle are not practical.
There are every year also Wies'ntrends (some funny some just ugly) and a Wies'nhit (music song played most). This year one of the Wiesntrend's were the "BIERABWISCHBANDL" a sweatband with letters to wipe the beer from you mouth after drinking... I think it was not so beautiful but funny... A beautiful and every year again loved gift is a heart out of ginger bread, it is decorated and you can choose from different slogans.
At last my dirndl's:

Blue dirndl ( don't know the label anymore- I have it since I'm 15) with blue Cardigan/ GiLara, a brown pretzel necklace (made by a friend's friend), my headband, traditonal bracelets with brown stones, blue bag/Primark and brown ballerina flats....

Lederhos'n (also don't know) with blue checked pattern blouse with heart buttons/ Rena Lange and Burlington socks (worn with alpine boots)

blue/green/white checked pattern dirnd'l with lace (no name from a small dind'l store in austria) I pasted it with rhinestones and did the blouse and apron, Wies'n necklace with heart made out of a scarf (can find it at every Wies'n), green Cardigan/GiLara, green bag made by myself and green suede ballerina flats

My beloved light pink dirnd'l/ Sportalm Kitzbühel, Cardigan with flowers/ GiLara, Pashmina Scarf, Tiffany necklace and charm, green bag and heels with bow/Guiseppe Zanotti
I hope you had fun reading this and fell not asleep and I hope I didn't forget anything.
